HISTORY

Aquaman's life as king and hero has been fraught with great triumph and tragedy. As an infant, the waterbreathing Prince Orin, heir to the throne of Atlantis, was abandoned on a reef to die in the receding tide. Saved by a dolphin, Porm, he was raised by her. A kindly lighthouse keeper, Arthur Curry, taught him the ways and language of the surface world, and Orin took the lighthouse keeper's name as his. He met the Flash (Barry Allen), was dubbed Aquaman, and helped found the Justice League of America. With Aqualad, later Tempest, he became known as protector of all the oceans and its creatures. Orin returned to Atlantis to be king. He met and married Mera, a queen from another dimension. Their first child died at the hands of an enemy, the Black Manta. Subsequently, Mera left him, and his kingdom was lost but later regained. Another villain, Charybdis, cost him his left hand. Throughout all the tragedy and triumph, there has never been a question that he is the King of the Seas.

If the JLA is a modern pantheon, then Aquaman is its Neptune, King of the Seas and master of almost three quarters of the Earth. His name is feared and respected from the shallow shores of the Mediterranean to the blackest depths of the Marianas Trench where the blind fish swim and only he can walk. Every living thing in the sea knows that their king would willingly die for any one of them, as they would for him. A broad, bombastic man, a peerless warrior king and truly a great storyteller, Aquaman is an inspirational figure in the Justice League. Often silent, as is his way, he speaks with an accent as beautiful as a whale-song and an informed clarity that others cannot ignore. Difficult to know at first, Aquaman takes his time forming relationships but will always be there for you when he does.

Aquaman's history with Hawkman has changed over the decades. From a partner within the Justice League to two people who may or may not have heard each other, back to common allies. For the most part, the only times that Aquaman met up with Hawkman were in the Justice League, but in the Shadow War of Hawkman series, the Hawks had to take out Aquaman and Elongated Man in order to defeat Thanagarian spies. Later, in the third Hawkman series, the two teamed up during the Avatar fiasco. The only other recognition there has ever been that Aquaman and Hawkman were close was during the battle the current JLA had with Heaven, when Aquaman met Zauriel for the first time and mistook him for Hawkman.
