THE ARTISTS: JAN DUURSEMA

Jan Duursema didn't have that many issues pencilled with "Hawkworld" or "Hawkman's" third series. Ten in total. But her style was enough to leave a lasting mark on true Hawk fans. After issue six of "Hawkman III," she was lured away to Marvel Comics, where she did quite a bit of work on the different X-titles, more notably "X-Force."

Like Steven Lieber, Jan is a graduate of the Joe Kubert School for Comic Book Art, graduating in 1979. Other books she has worked on include Advanced Dungeons and Dragons and Warlord for DC Comics and Professor Xavier and the X-Men and Incredible Hulk for Marvel Comics. "It was a great place if you wanted to draw all your life, which both Tom [Mandrake , now her husband] and I did," she says of her days at the school.

"Nobody ever came by and yelled at you to stop doodling! It was very exciting for me, because I'd gone to a fine-arts program and graduated knowing I couldn't make a living. Going to the Kubert School offered the challenge of knowing I'd come out trained to make a living, and that was very exciting." And what was her biggest learned lesson? "When you're laying out a page, keep the camera moving around and don't stand still or it gets boring.".

Special thanks to Wizard Guide to Comics for the article on graduates from the Joe Kubert School.

Just a couple of examples of Jan's art work.
