"As Above... The treachery of Thanagar - the fabled land of privilege, a perfect society fuelled by a conspiracy so vast no person can stand in its way"

Quote taken from Hawkworld: As Above, So Below #2

Elite HawkmenThe Elite Hawkmen are essentially, the best of the best of Thanagarian military. But they were not originally elite, they were Wingmen. The Elite Hawkmen were formed from an idea of Alien Affairs official Kanjar Ro, who informed Thal Porvis and Andar Pul (both high ranking officials within Thanagarian government) of the possibility of having Katar Hol, "Thanagar's Greatest Hero," become a traitor. The plan was to make the winged helmet, a symbol of heroism on Thanagar amongst the Wingmen, more a concept than a part of the man.

The winged helmet was turned from an honour, to a goal, for soldiers in the Wingmen group. A competition was held and the best of the best stepped forward. The plan was, if an individual falters, they have failed Thanagar, but the failure does not touch Thanagar. And if they were to die while wearing the winged helmet, then they are seen as martyrs and their sacrifice increases the mystique of the Hawkman. Therefore it was believed it was not the individual that counted, but the idea. The concept of the Hawkman.

The elite forces basically carry the same weaponry and uniform of the Wingmen, with the exception of the winged helmet. However, their weaponry and armour is slightly superior to that of the Wingmen. In order to ensure the Elite Hawkmen Soldiers' status as the best of the best they are only sent into battle when the odds are definitely in favour of a victory. They are never sent into a flash zone, but often end up slaughtering their opponents.
